Lubricant – Sensational or Risky?

Make it wet!

Lubricants are probably among the most commonly used sex products of all time. They come in different colors, flavors, various consistencies, and properties. Some are simply meant to increase lubrication, while others are designed to provide warmth or enhance or reduce sensitivity. Interestingly, in Germany, there are very few regulations on what is allowed in sex toys and lubricants. This makes it all the more important to take a closer look at the ingredients.

One in five women suffers from vaginal dryness

Sex, according to society, is supposed to be hot, natural, and uncomplicated—and above all, wet! However, 20% of women in Germany experience vaginal dryness, as shown by the Global Sex Survey from Durex. Forty percent of women report not always being sufficiently lubricated during sex. Penetration without adequate lubrication can be painful and lead to injury. The solution? A suitable lubricant—but which one is the best for sensitive skin?

To keep things smooth: Why lubricants are important

Lubricant is a popular tool for a comfortable, smooth, and intimate experience. It is used by people of all ages and genders to reduce friction and enhance sexual pleasure. While most people focus on the benefits of lubricant, it is also crucial to be aware of potentially harmful ingredients that some products may contain.

Often, we grab the biggest tube off the drugstore shelf or order anonymously online without reading the ingredients list. But what is really in these products? Are they safe for long-term use?

It's all about the ingredients:

Glycerin

Glycerin is a common ingredient in lubricants due to its moisturizing properties, which is why it is also found in many cosmetics. However, glycerin can cause irritation and infections in the intimate area for some people. The likelihood of urinary tract infections increases, and other infections are also encouraged by glycerin. It can promote yeast growth, particularly in women prone to yeast infections. The increased moisture from glycerin can disrupt the balance of vaginal microflora, increasing the risk of a Candida infection. It can also cause a pH imbalance: Some glycerin-containing lubricants may alter the vaginal pH. The normal pH of the vagina is acidic to maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms, but an elevated pH caused by glycerin may lead to infections and dryness.

Often not vegan: Glycerin can be derived from plants or animal by-products like slaughterhouse waste. Therefore, those adhering to a vegan lifestyle need to be cautious.

Parabens

Parabens are artificial preservatives found in many cosmetic products. They are often used in lubricants to prolong their shelf life. However, parabens have been linked to hormonal disruptions and potential effects on fertility. It is advisable to choose paraben-free lubricants to minimize potential health risks.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol gives lubricants a smooth consistency, but it can cause allergic reactions or skin irritation in sensitive individuals. It is recommended to use a lubricant that does not contain propylene glycol.

Fragrances and Dyes

Some lubricants contain fragrances and dyes to create a more pleasant experience. However, these ingredients can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. It is best to choose lubricants without fragrances and dyes to minimize the risk of irritation.

Preservatives

Ingredients like polyhexanide (PHMB), a preservative classified by the EU as a hazardous substance, are also used in medical products. Polyhexanide is mainly used to disinfect wounds or materials. Its use in the vagina can have significant negative effects, as it can disrupt the delicate vaginal microflora and alter the natural pH balance. It may also promote vaginal dryness. The use of certain silicones and paraffins is also concerning.

Sugar and Alcohol

  • Some lubricants contain sugar or alcohol to create a sweet scent. Sugar promotes yeast infections and urinary tract infections, while alcohol can damage vaginal flora and cause dryness. While these ingredients are not uncommon during sex, they should definitely not be used on mucous membranes.
  • Note: The ingredients mentioned are not present in every lubricant, and some are only harmful with frequent or prolonged use. We are also referring to vaginal mucous membranes—there is no flora in the anus that can be damaged.

But what should you use instead?

We recommend our Ginger Spray. Instead of forming a film on the mucous membranes, it stimulates your own natural moisture production. It causes the mucous membranes to swell and become more sensitive, meaning you get more out of it and only need a few sprays each time. Good to know: Naturally Naughty uses only natural ingredients!

What's in the Ginger Spray?

Ingredients of Ginger Spray:

Water

Only the finest natural plant extracts and purified water according to DIN standard ISO 9001:2015 are used on your skin.

Ginger Extract

The ginger plant can grow up to 1.5 meters and forms a yellowish root that can be harvested after around 240 days. It grows mostly in the tropics and subtropics. Ginger contains over 100 natural ingredients. While we can't list them all, we want to mention the most important ones for enhancing pleasure: gingerols and shogaols.

Sweet Blackberry Leaf Extract

The first historical record of the use of blackberry leaves as medicine is from the Greek physician Galen, who practiced in Rome. Soldiers who drank the blackberry tea prescribed by him reported stronger, healthier teeth and feeling energized. Ignite the soldier of love in you while blackberry leaves give our spray a special taste.

Xanthan Gum

Xanthan is a naturally occurring dietary fiber that we use in organic quality as a thickener. It cannot be metabolized by the human body and is therefore classified as dietary fiber.

Conclusion: Which lubricant is best for you?

Not all lubricants are the same. It is important to pay attention to the ingredients and choose products that suit your specific needs, such as sensitive skin or latex allergies. Opt for natural, gentle alternatives to promote your sexual well-being and avoid unwanted side effects.
